Typical dishes from Ica:


Pallares: A stew of savory butter beans seasoned with aji (hot pepper).
Morusa:
Mashed butter beans with roast beef or pork.
Picante de Pallares:
Spicy butter beans with milk, eggs and fresh cheese.
Carapulcra:
Dehydrated potatoes, boiled and cooked with pork and chicken, aji panca and mirasol (chili peppers), garlic, and other spices.

ICA TOURISM PROJECT

Conclusions

The province of Ica is not a formality in its accommodation services, catering and transport, causing decline of the quality of services provided.

The standard of living is low average, due to lack of basic services in the area and the poverty level q affects this province.

The level of middle-level education is low due to the lack of schools shows a relatively upward illiteracy rate in the last year.

The province of Ica has a large number of tourist attractions in the first hierarchy, which would facilitate the planning of various tour operators and tourist attracting attention faster.

STRENGTHS

• Strategic location. It is located between areas of tourist influence: Lima, Cuzco, Arequipa.
• Four hours of the largest issuer of domestic tourism and gateway for inbound tourism.

Provide facilities for study of tourism services through conferences, courses providing Mincetur, which granted certificates of study and ability to work in a tourist establishment.

Categorization:

Study campaigns and legalization of all tourist facilities, with free advice to repair the deficiencies of the establishments and facilities for the licensing of temporary and permanent work.

Holidays and Traditions

Harvest Festival (March first half)

This festival also called the Harvest Festival, celebrates the harvest of grapes and wine from the region of Ica. The Harvest includes exhibitions, competitions, exhibitions of horses in passing parades of floats, musical festivals and parties where they dance the Afro celebration.
One of the highlights of this festival is the election and coronation of the Queen of the Harvest, who accompanied by her court, treads the grapes to extract the juice of the fruit that will become the spirit.
The parade of The Vintage is organized on the main day, where a group of festival queens parading in cars throwing bunches of grapes as they pass. This is a good time to try different wines of Ica and Pisco, as well as popular cachina, fermented liquor prepared.



The Lord of  Lauren (October second and third weeks)
The origin of the devotion to the Lord of Luren, patron of the city of Ica, dates back to 1570 when this image was mysteriously lost in the desert during the journey from Lima to Ica and then was found in an isolated spot named Luren.
The main day of the festival, the image is taken in procession along the main streets of the city from dusk until the sun rises the next day. Hundreds of people travel to the city of Ica to join the procession, and to participate in recitation of prayers over nine days in search of special favors and show their devotion. Ica streets are filled with beautiful arches and carpets of flowers, specially made for the occasion.


Summer Festival Black / FebruaryDuring this festival takes place on Afro-Peruvian dance competition. In addition, craft fairs, wine and food parades through the main streets of the city. Black Summer in Chincha (fourth week).
In the District of El Carmen, is a festival of a week in honor of black people. Stories and poetry contests are held, as well as black dance festivals fun, enthusiastic, marches and other activities.





Easter Ica / March or AprilThe festival begins on Palm Sunday with the procession of Mr. de Triomphe and ends with the procession of Resurrection, also known as "Procession of the very drunk." All streets are decorated with rugs and triumphal arches.


Ica Tourism Week / SeptemberDuring the week Ica tourism exhibitions are carried out Peruvian Paso Horse, cockfighting competitions, wine, pisco tasting, walking from winery to winery and international competition for sandboarding. In order to promote the main attractions of the city, Ica organizes exhibitions of horses by the way, wine competitions, events, degustation of pisco, hiking in wine cellars and the International Competition of Sand Boarding.




Virgen del Rosario de Yauca / September-October

Mass pilgrimage in which thousands of pilgrims walk 25 km from Ica to Yauca district of Rosario. Sweeps are performed traditional, novenas and fair manners.


Nazca Tourism Week (May 15)Carried out a series of cultural activities take place in Nazca in honor of Maria Reiche, who spent many years studying the Nazca Lines.


Fishermen's Festival, San Pedro and San Pablo, Religious Party (May 1929)The Cala of San Andrés, Pisco, made festivities in honor of San Pedro and San Pablo, whose images are taken on a scenic boat ride, accompanied by bands and fishermen. The celebrations include cooking competitions featuring seafood and dishes prepared from fish, challenging the imagination of the best cooks.




TOURISM POTENCIAL

The potential for tourism begins in the province of Chincha and stretches all the way to Marcona in the province of Nazca. There are also opportunities in the archaeological paleontological and historical legacies, in eco tourism and adventure tourism.
The tourist wealth goes hand in hand with fine dining and in addition, the Ica department has the distinction of being the place of origin for the production of pisco.
Currently, Ica is considered the second most visited department of Peru, with approximately 580,000 overnight stays by foreign and domestic tourists in 2004.


MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Paracas National Reserve
Covers an area of 3,350 hectares and is one of the most important protected areas in Peru, being the only one with a marine ecosystem. The place is a refuge for sea lions, Humboldt penguins, flamingos and other birds among others. Located 250 kilometers from Lima.

From the Paracas beach, in the province of Pisco, you can visit the Ballestas Islands and San Gallan, home to sea lions by boat. On the way there is a figure of a chandelier, engraved on the side of a hill.



 
The Chandelier

This geoglyph large rock formation has been eroded by wind and sea for millions of years. It is more than 120 meters long and is also called Tres Cruces or Trident. The best way to see it is from the sea.

The tourist information office of the reservation is called the Visitor Center and is located on the 27 kilometer mark of the road from Pisco Puerto San Martín. Information is available about the reservation and the species that are preserved there. Moreover, also the Museum Julio C. Tello (next to the Visitor Center) offers a representative sample of the Paracas culture such as beds, mummies and pottery.
Huacachina Lagoon

Considered one of the most beautiful places in the Peruvian coast, located 5 kilometers from the city of Ica, it is an oasis of lush vegetation (dunes, palm trees, tamarisk and eucalyptus) and green sulfur curative waters. Las Dunas de Ica, are considered the best place for sand-boarding.


Town of Chincha

Located 202 kilometers from the city of Ica, is a rich oasis with pre-Inca ruins. Cradle of much of the black population and its rich folklore. The Hacienda San Jose has tunnels and punishment cells for former slaves.







Humay village

Where the ruins of Tambo Colorado can be found. The complex was built on an ancient fort of the ´Chinch´ culture,  later adapted and transformed by the  Pachacutec in the fifteenth century.

Located 45 kilometers of the Libertadores, this urban center is the best preserved site on  the Inca Coast. Tambo Colorado's name comes from the union of the Quechua word "Tampu" which means place of rest and the Spanish word "Colorado" because of the color of its walls.


Melchorita Sanctuary
Located 10 kilometers from the city of Chincha,  Saravia Melchora Tasayco, known as the Melchorita was a Franciscan tertiary devoted to the virgin Santa Rosa de Lima. She devoted her life to caring for the poor and sick people.


In the province of Nasca are the Walls, located 2 kilometers from the city, of Nazca and is thought to have been an Incan administrative center. It consists of rooms, terraces, patios with stone foundations and adobe walls. In addition to the Aqueduct, real galleries with boulder walls and slate roofs can be found that run, in some cases, twelve feet deep.

In San Pablo, in the province of Nasca, you can visit the Casa Museo Maria Reiche.




Nazca Lines

The ancient people of the Nazca culture have left a valuable archaeological legacy which includes a huge network of lines and drawings of animals and plants in an area of approximately 350 square kilometers. The spectacular size and shape of the drawings are fabled and are not to be missed.

It is located 25 kilometers from the city of Nazca, between kilometers 419 and 165 of the Panamericana Sur.

Discovered in 1927 by Toribio Mejia Xexxpe, Paul Kosok, Hans Horkheirmer and German doctor Maria Reiche, known as the Lady of Nazca, who lived in the area for over 50 years studying and investigating its origin.



To fly over the Nazca Lines is an unforgettable experience. There is also a vantage point 12 meters from where you can see the figures of "The Hand" and "The Tree."

These giant tracks and furrows of up to 30 cm depth form a huge network of lines and drawings in the sand.

The findings state, according to researcher Kosok´s theory, it is a giant calendar with astronomical signs, built over two thousand years ago.
The Nazca Lines were declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1994.

 

Other Attractions:
Wineries Vitinícola: Tacama, Ocucaje and Vista Alegre are just minutes away from Ica. Traditional cellars used for making wine and pisco can be seen here.

Beaches La Mina, Lagunillas and Raspon: sandy, low waves and clear water, ideal for recreation.

Yumaque Beach: Favorite beach bathers. Care should be taken, it is a nesting place for birds.

The Cathedral and Los Frailes are rock formations on the coast caused by wind and sea erosion. You can visit the interior of the Cathedral (Dome).

Punta Arquillo: natural viewing point from where you can see colonies of sea lions and other species.
